Stress & Anxiety Therapy in Ontario

Compassionate Support for All Communities

Stress and anxiety are experiences we all encounter, but when they persist and start to feel overwhelming, they can take a real toll on both your health and your overall sense of well-being. Anxiety often appears as persistent worry, racing thoughts, or a sense of dread that can make even everyday tasks feel challenging. It can affect your concentration, sleep, and energy, and over time, chronic stress and anxiety can contribute to physical symptoms such as tension, headaches, or fatigue.

If you recognize any of these common signs, please know you’re not alone:

  • Persistent worry or fear
  • Racing heart or quickened breathing
  • Trouble sleeping or focusing
  • Restlessness or irritability
  • Physical symptoms like headaches or fatigue

Acknowledging these feelings is a brave first step toward finding relief. Seeking stress therapy Ontario or online anxiety counselling Ontario can provide the guidance and support you need to regain balance and calm in your life.

Initial Consultation & Comprehensive Assessment

During our first consultation, I conduct a detailed assessment to understand your mental health fully. Stress levels, interpersonal relationships, exercise, nutrition, work-life balance, sleep, hormones, and heredity all play significant roles in emotional well-being. By addressing these factors together, we can develop strategies that lead to lasting improvements in how you cope with stress and anxiety.

Understanding the Role of Anti-Anxiety Medications

Prescription medications for anxiety can be highly effective in reducing symptoms such as persistent worry, panic, or restlessness. For many, they provide the relief needed to function and to engage in other therapeutic activities. However, relying solely on medication often doesn’t bring about long-term wellness, and these prescriptions aren’t always effective for everyone. For these reasons, I focus on an integrative approach that combines natural therapies and psychotherapy with conventional treatment when appropriate.

Integrating Natural Medicines and Psychotherapy

As a naturopathic doctor and psychotherapist, I use evidence-based natural medicines to support mental and emotional well-being. These treatments can be used on their own or alongside prescription medications prescribed by your physician. Some of the approaches I may recommend include:

The Importance of a Holistic Approach

A holistic approach to mental health considers the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. By addressing the full range of factors that affect stress and anxiety, we can create a personalized and effective treatment plan. Key elements I focus on include:

Stress Management

Chronic stress is one of the most common contributors to anxiety. Learning effective stress management techniques through stress therapy Ontario can help reduce symptoms and improve overall well-being.

Interpersonal Relationships

Healthy relationships provide support, understanding, and a sense of belonging. Conversely, conflict or toxic dynamics can fuel anxiety. Therapy can help strengthen positive connections and work through interpersonal challenges.

Nutrition

Nutrition directly impacts mood, energy, and resilience. A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients supports brain health and emotional stability. I provide practical, manageable guidance to help you nourish your body and support your mental health.

Exercise

Regular physical activity is proven to reduce stress hormones and calm anxious thoughts. I understand that starting an exercise routine can feel overwhelming when you’re stressed. Together, we can develop small, realistic goals and build an enjoyable routine that supports your mental health.

Work-Life Balance

Stress and anxiety often increase when there’s little space for rest or self-care. I can help you set boundaries, prioritize downtime, and create more balance between responsibilities and the things that nurture you.

Sleep

Sleep is essential for managing anxiety. Poor sleep can increase irritability, racing thoughts, and difficulty coping with everyday stressors. Establishing a calming bedtime routine, creating a restful environment, and sometimes using herbal support can all help improve sleep quality.

Hormone Balance

Hormonal fluctuations and imbalances can affect mood and anxiety levels. For example, thyroid conditions or changes during the menstrual cycle or perimenopause can heighten anxiety symptoms. During your initial consultation, we can assess whether hormones may be contributing to your experience.

  • Uncontrollable worrying

  • Having an increased heart rate
  • Breathing rapidly (hyperventilation)
  • Sweating
  • Trembling or restlessness
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Trouble concentrating

  • Stress buildup: A big event or a buildup of smaller stressful life situations may trigger excessive anxiety.
  • Illness: Having a health condition or serious illness can cause significant worry about issues such as your treatment and your future.
  • Specific medications and medical conditions
  • Sleep disorders & lack of sleep
  • Substance or alcohol abuse: Drugs and alcohol can cause or worsen anxiety.
  • Genetic factors
  • Childhood trauma

There are no specific tests for anxiety, therefore the diagnosis is made based on a thorough review of your symptoms. Medical questionnaires are often helpful in diagnosing anxiety and in monitoring your treatment. To begin an assessment, click here for a questionnaire. Please bring this completed questionnaire to your initial consultation to review with Dr. Guthrie. (Please note, this questionnaire on its own cannot diagnose anxiety. Please consult with a professional).

The two main conventional treatments for anxiety disorders are psychotherapy and medications. The medications commonly used are anti-anxiety medications (such as benzodiazepines) and anti-depressant medications. Combination approaches are commonly prescribed so that immediate relief is felt from the medication while psychotherapy can give longer term benefit.

The Naturopathic medical approach to treating anxiety is holistic, looking at the many aspects of mental and emotional well-being. Using counseling techniques, herbal medicines, acupuncture and/or nutritional supplements, Dr. Guthrie aims to:

  1. Reduce anxiety, worrying and the associated physical symptoms
  2. Support healthy hormone and neurotransmitter balance
  3. Teach anxiety management techniques, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness
  4. Improve stress management through healthy lifestyle changes
  5. Use nutritional strategies to promote calm mood
